Our Goal
We're a nonprofit diabetes awareness charity in northern Michigan focusing on diabetes facts, diabetes symptoms, and diabetes information - and operate through donations and the sale of diabetes awareness clothing. Our main goal is to provide scholarships to young children - enabling them to attend diabetes camp. Our hope for the future is to give medical supplies for those in need.

Our Background
My name's Alyssa Veliquette. My younger brother, Nathan, fell ill in March 2001. Three short months later he was diagnosed with type 1 (one) diabetes. I was 6 years old when he was diagnosed, and was completely unaware of what was happening. All I knew was that the once equally divided attention between my brother and I was now altered, and Nathan was getting much more than me. With the understanding of a 6 year old, I was confused, lonely, and sad. If this is how I was coping with his disease as his big sister, how was Nathan handling such a change?

In third grade I determined I would be the person to cure diabetes. On my own intellectual strength I would improve the lives of millions of people around the globe! As I began to discover that science is one of my weaker subjects (and that I would need a team of brilliant minds to help me find a cure) I decided to find other methods of improving lives affected by diabetes. In fifth grade I had the epiphany that I could help as I was. Instead of asking for birthday presents I asked people to make donations to the Ryan Dobry Diabetes Charity. Raising over five hundred dollars, I was stunned. That's a ton of money to an eleven year old!

When I was 13 I began competing in the Miss America organization. Never before had my eyes been open to the amount of change one person can make. Longing to leave my positive fingerprint on this world and show others love, I came to a conclusion: I wanted to found my own diabetes charity. It was no longer too difficult or out of my reach. It became possible. My mom was supportive and, although it was a long process, it was worth it. Everything's now in motion with Great Lakes Diabetes Charity, and I’m soliciting the support from northern Michigan's diabetes advocates to help make a difference to those affected by diabetes. By donating you can play a role in providing scholarships for young diabetics - both enabling them to attend diabetes camp and supplying the needy with medical supplies.
